The 12th-ranked ASU soccer team collected their first conference win of the season after defeating Eastern New Mexico in a tight 1-0 match on Saturday, Sept. 25 on the ASU Soccer Field.
The Belles looked to bounce back after their 16-match winning streak dating back to the start of last season was snapped on Wednesday, Sept. 22 in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the St. Mary’s Rattlers in San Antonio.
ASU started to build pressure on ENMU from the opening kick, attempting six shots in the first 15 minutes of the match and eventually racking up a total of 16 shots in the opening half and 21 for the day. However, all would come to nothing as the score remained empty at halftime.
The Belles kept the pressure going in the second half, forcing two yellow cards on the Greyhounds. In the 53rd minute, a handball by a defender allowed junior Valerie Solis to knock in her first goal of the season and the only goal of the match to give the Belles the lead and the eventual victory.
When asked about the positives of the match, head coach Travis McCorkle highlighted the defense.
“We switched to a back three in the second half and they did a good job defending for us in the 3v2 and 2v2 situations.”
The Belles now hold a 6-1 record on the year and 1-1 in LSC play following the victory and are scheduled to take on Texas A&M International on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at the ASU Soccer Field.
