UREC adds outdoor program, kayaks
The University Recreation and Intramurals Department will offer a new outdoor program that will be located at the Lake House.
Junior Daniel Tovar thinks students should take advantage of the program.
"That sounds like it'd be a lot of fun," Tovar said. "It would get more people involved in outdoor activities and give them more options."
UREC Director Bradley Petty said the introduction of the outdoor program is an attempt to present more opportunities for participation in recreational activities, broadening its scope beyond just the "traditional student who plays intramural sports."
The outdoor program will provide students with access to equipment such as kayaks, backpacks, and mountain bicycles, Petty said, and will offer outdoor adventure workshops instructed by faculty and staff, along with community experts.
A kayaking skills workshop, scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 29 from 5:30. to 7:30 p.m., will be led by professional kayaking instructor Taylor Cole.
According to Petty, 18 seats will be available and anyone interested should call the UREC office located in the Center for Human Performance for reservations.
In addition to kayaking, UREC will eventually organize skiing, hiking and Spring break trips to high adventure areas, according to Petty.
"When the recreational sports building facility is built... we will hire an assistant director for outdoor adventures and a graduate assistant," he said.
The assistant will help lead these trips.
In October, the CHP will begin a project to expand the building to include a rock-climbing tower, weight room and indoor jogging track. The existing weight room in the CHP will become a dance studio, which Petty said will hopefully allow the UREC to offer up to 40 fitness programs a week as opposed to the 10 they now offer. Classes the UREC currently offer boot camp, an abs workshop, circuit training and cardio sculpt.
Petty said UREC ultimately hopes for all students, staff and faculty to become involved in at least one UREC program.
