Fort Concho hosts a baseball league that allows participants to step back in time with one of America's pastimes. The team had its first meeting and practice of the season Feb. 26.

"The league is based on teams from 1887," Founder Corey Robinson said.

During that time, there were six local teams in San Angelo, including an infantry team, and a Fort Concho calvary team, Robinson said.

The league travels to other historic sites to play baseball games and hold demonstrations that show what baseball was like, he said.

They begin playing March 5 at Fort Clark in Brackettville, TX and events last through December.

Sophomore R.J. Pase, professor of music Tim Bonenfant, and Layne Lubke, 10, of Wall, attended.

"It's a fun learning experience and good exercise," said Liz Lubke, Layne's mother. "It gets them interested in other things and gets them out of the house."

The league does not play with modern rules.

"We play with the rules from 1860, so the game is easier because of the simple rules," Robinson said. "There is a very relaxed feel to it."

There are no fees to join the team. Robinson provides uniforms and equipment for the participants.

"The only thing we don't provide are cleats," Robinson said. "Participants need plain black cleats so that they don't stand out with the vintage uniforms."

"There may also be some travel expenses when the team travels out of town, though it usually carpools, he said.

"We are always looking for more volunteers to come out and join us," Robinson said "Any gender, color, religion or age is welcome."

Anyone who would like to participate is invited to call Robinson at 657-4444, or e-mail him at
