The Angelo State women's soccer team are moving on to the next round of the LSC Tournament after defeating the St. Mary's Rattlers 1-0 this past Tuesday, April 6. The Belles held a well- earned home- field advantage after they cruised to an undefeated regular season following a 6-0 win against UT Permian Basin and a 5-0 win against Texas A&M International. Their 7-0 record earned them hosting duties for the LSC Tournament and the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
The Belles dominated the first thirty minutes of the game. They sent several dangerous crosses into the St. Mary’s box and notched several shots just off goal, as well as forced a couple of saves from the St. Mary’s keeper. These came from the aggressive play of Valerie Solis and Cassidy Hill. Despite their aggressive play, the Belles couldn't break the deadlock in the first half.
The second half featured more of the same for Angelo State. The Belles applied more pressure on offense, and in the 80th minute, Emily Keoughan collected a pass in the box between two St. Mary's defenders and buried it in the back of the net to give the Belles the 1-0 lead. Despite the late goal, the Belles never stopped attacking, letting a couple more fly before the end of the game. The game ended with an ASU victory, 1-0.
The Belles will host St. Edward’s in the semifinal round this Saturday, April 10, at the ASU Soccer Field. The Belles won both of their previous matchups against St. Edwards, and did not concede a goal in either game. They will look to continue their excellent defensive form and offensive production to try and knock St. Edward's out of the tournament and continue their perfect season.
