Angelo State University alumnus Cody Vasquez launched his dream project, the C. Vasquez Professional & Leadership Development Group, in February this year.

The program will run for 13 weeks from Feb. 9 to May 4.

Vasquez’s group of leaders were invited to volunteer with the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce’s 105th Annual Banquet, which was held Thursday, March 4.

Vasquez stated that normally the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce recruits ASU and Howard students to help with their banquet, but this year they could not do so. This created a great opportunity for the C. Vasquez Leadership Program to step in and help out.

“They came to us to make sure they had people to volunteer and help out with the banquet,” Vasquez said. “We work closely with the Chamber, they helped with the ribbon cutting at our first meeting as well as helped develop our program, so they are already really familiar with us.”

The volunteers helped accomplished various jobs throughout the banquet, ranging from preparing salads, refilling drinks, serving guests and retrieving empty plates throughout the event.

“Whenever I graduated from ASU, the one thing I always said was I’m going to actually be an entrepreneur,” Vasquez said. “Now that I have done it, I sat down and built this, it feels great to actually be living in it.”

Vasquez’s plan from here, for his program, is to have more branches. The first branch to launch along with his company is the Leadership Program which, according to the website, works with high school and college students to focus on three main aspects: professionalism, leadership and life skills.

Vasquez hopes to eventually duplicate his program for more age groups in addition to his current group that is made up of students from ASU, Central High School, Christoval High School, Cornerstone Christan School and Texas Leadership Charter Academy.

“I want to develop something for workplaces and maybe even elementary students if we go that young,” Vasquez said. “Overall, just to help people develop professional leadership skills. It doesn’t have to be a full program, it can be a one day event or lectures just to get information out there.”

Vasquez built connections really well with the people around San Angelo before he graduated to make sure whenever he created the C. Vasquez Professional & Leadership Development group, people would know who his leaders are. He wanted to make sure people knew his leaders’ names so they could network.

“If there are any ASU students interested in the Leadership Program, we’ll do it again in the summer and again in the Spring,” Vasquez said. “It is relatively easy to work, very hands-on, you get to meet with people, your team and the people of San Angelo. Summer registration will open up in April for anyone who is interested.”
