On Jan. 7 Buttercup All Day Cafe opened its doors in San Angelo less than a mile from ASU’s campus and has since begun serving espresso drinks, coffee, tea, chai, matcha, nitro cold brew, homemade bubbly water, lite fare, beer and wine. This car-wash turned small business is run by a fascinating business power couple who specialize in coffee-related businesses.

Before coming to San Angelo, Daniel and Jessie Browning lived in Marfa, Texas with their four kids and two coffee shops.  According to the Brownings, they had never really planned on leaving. The Brownings said they were looking to do more with their businesses and didn’t have much of a market to expand due to the small size of the town and the small space their business is in.

The question then was, why San Angelo? What would bring two people from Massachusetts and Victoria, Texas who met in Austin, Texas and spent twelve years living and growing a business in Marfa to San Angelo, Texas?

The Brownings said it was actually a family road trip to San Angelo in 2018 that showed them this cozy little college town was ripe for a new coffee shop. Jessie and Daniel said they realized San Angelo would be an amazing place for their next business because they felt there were almost a deficit of coffee shops here.

“In places like Dallas, Austin, San Antonio or even El Paso, there is a very small margin of entry and it is hard to get started with so much competition, but here we had a good chance,” Daniel Browning said.

The Brownings said they originally hoped to open Buttercup All Day Cafe around May or June of last year, but due to COVID-19, they wanted to make sure their other businesses were stable before opening up a new coffee shop.

The name Buttercup All Day Cafe didn’t come to them all at once, according to Jessie. Their other two businesses are coffee shop laundromat hybrids. Farma is located in Marfa, Texas and Plaine is located in Alpine, Texas respectively. Both of these business names come from anagrams of the cities they are in.

"We tried so hard to make an anagram of San Angelo, but gave up on that dream pretty quickly... nothing sounded good at all," Jessie Browning said.

Jessie said she actually came up with the name Buttercup one day in their house. She saw a cross stitch made by her sister-in-law that said “Suck It Up Buttercup” and it just spoke to her. From there on out, Buttercup was the name. Jessie said the "All Day Cafe" part came from a culinary trend that implies having cafes open all day and that they wanted their cafe to be the middle place between work and home.

Buttercup All Day Cafe has been up and running for over a month now, but Daniel says they’re still technically operating in their “pre-opening stage” because the blossoming small business still has new and exciting things to offer its patrons and is not fully stocked with all they want to offer the community. Buttercup All Day Cafe just started serving ice cream and will also serve beer and wine in the near future. The Brownings said that ice cream is a staple of their other shops.

"You come in and the ice cream is right there in a big display case in front of the cash register," Daniel Browning said of their Marfa location. "However, we want Buttercup to really be a coffee shop... that also serves ice cream, which is why it's in a big freezer in the back."

Buttercup All Day Cade also offers a discount to ASU students through the Student Government Association’s Student Discount Program and offers a reward program to anyone in the community who signs up.

Buttercup All Day Cafe shut down for almost two weeks due to the water issues and winter storm that plagued San Angelo but have since resumed business as of Feb. 22.  They are located at 1921 Sherwood Way and are open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
