The Introduction

With Super Bowl 55 only two Sundays away, I figured to start the hype up with two columns leading up to the game about the two teams competing in a game that people consider to be equal to as if Michael Jordan and Lebron James competed in an NBA Finals series. The Tom Brady-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be taking on the defending champions Kansas City Chiefs led by young phenom Patrick Mahomes. In case it was not obvious yet, today’s column will be about the Bucs while next Friday will be about the Chiefs. If you’d like to look at the away uniforms, feel free to click on the link here from the Gridiron Uniform Database and scroll near the bottom. Without further ado, I hope you enjoy and let the shredding begin!

The Shredding of the Threads

In the offseason prior to this season, Tampa Bay did one of the best things they could have possibly done. No, it was not that they signed Tom Brady...but instead, finally got rid of those confusing alarm clock number uniforms and went back to their classic look that they had from 1997-2013 that they never should’ve moved away from in the first place. Maybe that is what gave them the fire to make it back to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2002. Overall, the two uniform sets are very similar aside from a few changes in details and adding a new uniform set that will be described later.

Starting off with the logo, it is one of my favorite logos in the NFL. It is criticized for being too complicated, but I just do not see it. The skull and crosswords with the football on it already looks fearsome, but that on top of the waving red flag attached to a sword just completes the total Buccaneers look as it incorporates all the colors used on the uniform set. And just like the current uniforms, the logo is an improvement in a modern direction from their previous iteration from 1997.

The helmet is the same throughout all the uniforms, as it is a pewter dome with a black facemask with a big flag logo on each side. I feel this simple design compliments each uniform combo that we’ve seen this season. If I had any gripe with them, it is just that the shades of pewter on the helmet and the shade throughout the uniform is a tad off, but that is nitpicking on the finish of the helmet over anything else. It was not like the Dallas Cowboys, where the silver on their helmets and the grey on their pants were completely different. A couple more consistencies throughout the set are the sleeve patch on the jerseys which is a big ship, paying homage to the big replica ship in their home stadium. The logo itself compliments the jerseys well. Next is the pants stripe which is on both the pewter and white pants. It is a triple stripe that varies in different colors and widths as it is a red center with a “Bay Orange” and black outline. I believe the striping itself looks good on the pewter colored pants, and absolutely amazing on the white pants as it just pops more.

Now let's talk about things that are not so consistent. As usual, the home uniform is first and overall, I really like the combo of the red jersey and the pewter pants in general. If you have read these columns before, then you know that I am one for the little details and this uniform has many that I enjoy. The front text is small, and it says “Buccaneers” in black and in a font that fits the theme of the team and looks like a typical pirate font when you imagine it. The numbers on the front and shoulders are white with a bay orange and black outline similar to the striping on the pants. My only negative about this uniform is that the orange gets lost in the white so unless you get a closeup look at a player in the uniform, it is hard to see in a general game broadcast. They’ve combined the red jerseys with the white pants which is the exact same as the pewter pants in terms of striping and details. I prefer the red and pewter combo over the red and white as the pewter pants go better with the pewter helmets but it’s a nice change to make occasionally.

For the away uniforms, it’s actually easier to explain as everywhere you see the red and white on the jersey is just flipped and keeps everything else the same. Something like this color scheme can come off as boring or lazy design-wise, but I believe it works well as the bay orange pops more with the red numbers and the jersey itself keeps its simplicity and looks good in the process. Just like the home jerseys, the white jerseys have been seen this season paired with the white and pewter pants. I believe the all-white look is just to clean over the white and pewter pair but as it is for the home uniforms, the options are always appreciated.

Last but not least, the Bucs added one new uniform to the set that was not in the original combinations. That is an all-pewter uniform that is my absolute favorite in the entire set. It is unique and the jersey and pants can only go with one another. The similarities to the other uniforms are the same in terms of the sleeve logo and the “Buccaneers” text on the front, but instead the text is red this time. The differences? Any striping that was black on the sleeve and collar on the original sets is now red. The pants have a simple triple color that is an even red, white and red striping.

The Conclusion

I never would have thought that an all-pewter uniform would look good, but the Bucs really hit the nail on the head with theirs. I am overall glad they went back to uniforms that had no problems. Maybe it can be seen as a blessing in disguise as if it wasn’t for the transformation, we would not have the updated logos and uniforms and be gifted with the all-pewter beauties. I give these uniforms an easy…

...for the simple fact that these are some of my favorite sets in the entire league. Next Friday, we will be taking a dive into the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs. I hope you enjoyed this edition of Shred on Threads.
