The ASU Belles have had many basketball games postponed or canceled after their game against Texas Tech on Dec. 9, leading to the team’s uneasy record of 1-4 through a five game stretch.
The Belles opened their regular season at home on Thursday, Jan. 14, where they fell to the then No. 3 Lubbock Christian Chaparrals 65-55 in a hard-fought season opener. Sophomore Sawyer Lloyd led the Belles in points, scoring 19 to go along with four steals, four rebounds and an assist.
Freshman Sadie Misner was another big contributor for the Belles’ offense going a perfect 8- 8 at the free throw line. She would finish the game scoring 18 points to go with three rebounds and a steal.
In their second regular season game, the Belles traveled to the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas on Saturday, Jan. 16, to take on Lubbock Christian one more time.
Bad shooting would be the downfall of the Belles, as they left losing 77-46 to the Chaps. The Blue and Gold would shoot an abysmal 32.1% from the field. Freshman Madeline Stephens would lead the Belles offense, scoring 17 points along with grabbing seven rebounds and an assist. Lloyd also added 13 points to go with seven rebounds and an assist as well.
The Belles played their first of many postponed games on Wednesday, Jan. 20, against Oklahoma Christian at the Junell Center where they would lose 56-47 to the Lady Eagles.
Stephens was the leading scorer for the Belles, as she picked up her first double-double of her collegiate career scoring 17 points and grabbing 14 rebounds to go along with three blocks and an assist. Senior Lana Marov was second in scoring for the Belles with 10 points, six rebounds and two assists.
The Blue and Gold traveled to the Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas next to take on another blue and gold team being the St. Mary’s Rattlers on Friday, Jan. 22 and Saturday, Jan 23.
The Belles and Rattlers would split the weekend matchup, with the Belles getting their first win 59-47 Friday night and the Rattlers taking Saturday’s game 69-52. Lloyd and Marov led the offense in both games for the Belles, combining for 63 points and 30 rebounds. Lloyd had 10 assists combined in both games and got eight steals on defense, including five in Friday's win.
The Belles will be back in action on Saturday, Jan 30. and Sunday, Jan 31. at the Junell Center where they will take on No. 19 Texas A&M-Commerce Lions. Both games on Saturday and Sunday are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
