This year’s Fall Series showcased a fireworks show at the conclusion of the games.

ASU Baseball on Oct 2 began an unorthodox intrasquad scrimmage series. From Oct 2 to Oct 4 then again from Oct 8 to ninth, the Rams invited college baseball fans to Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium for their annual Fall World Series.

A canvassing of audience members showed the return of ASU Baseball was a sign of hope and normality in the year of 2020.

The two ASU squads were the RamIt-19 in blue and the Moonpies in gold.

“When you do something like this, you sort of see where your depth is at,” said head baseball coach Kevin Brooks. “We had some good things, but we have to get more consistent.”

Mistakes were the story of the first three games. Despite strong starts from pitchers Carson Childers, Trent Baker, Matt Szabo and Austin Buley, countless walks, hits by pitch and passed balls plagued the pitching staff throughout the first weekend. This led to many runs and helped both teams come back from the deficits they faced.

In game one, an Aaron Walters RBI double in the bottom of the fifth put the Moonpies ahead, but a Riley Peterson solo shot in the top of the sixth helped RamIt-19 surge to an 8-4 victory. Junior Pitcher Jake Rodgers took the win in relief going 2 ⅓ innings, giving up four runs, walking two and striking out three.

The story of game two was the late-game offensive explosion by both teams aided by the 13 total walks by both teams that led to as many runs after the sixth inning. Senior Tyler Mendoza went three for four with two doubles and a single to lead the Moonpies to a 12-8 win. Szabo took the win, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out two in his five innings of work to start the game.

A seven run third inning was all that was needed for RamIt-19 to win 7-5 in game three. Senior Nic Seginowich had the best at-bat hitting an RBI double to continue the scoring train for the blue team. Austin Buely took the win going five innings, giving up five hits, a walk and two runs while striking out one.

Junior Kolby Kelton was the star of game four going three for four with a home run, two doubles and five total RBIs helping RamIt-19 win the series over the Moonpies 8-4 and Rodgers took the win going 3 ⅔ innings with three walks and six strikeouts, leaving the game without giving up a hit.

Despite it not being needed, game five was still played to allow more depth on both sides to see some action. Senior Josh Elvir hit a pinch-hit two-run home run to help his team go out with a bang, 10-4. Junior Meyer was the winning pitcher for the series finale going three innings, giving up a run on four hits and striking out three.

These two weeks had allowed fans to see a preview of what this year’s team has to offer.

After losing the chance of a championship run last season due to the global pandemic, ASU was ranked No. 1 in the entirety of D2 schools and this weekend they showed that this team can fix its mistakes shown in this series and come into spring ready for redemption.
