People from around the country flooded Capitol Hill on Sept 23, and the following day to view the casket of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg lying in repose on the steps of the United States Supreme Court Building following her death the previous week.

Ginsburg, lifelong champion of gender equality, passed away on Sept 18, of complications from pancreatic cancer.

ASU alumna Briana Martinez attended the viewing and cited Ginsburg’s work in the equality movements as one of her biggest influences.

“Her ambition, intelligence, and strong sense of right and wrong mean the world to me and will continue to guide me both personally and professionally,” Martinez said.

The viewing itself consisted of a winding line of metal fencing along the side of the Supreme Court Building with the primary viewing area at the base of the steps and Ginsburg’s American flag draped casket resting at the top. The crowd practiced social distancing and wore masks, being sent to the steps in small groups to pay their respects.

Martinez described a somber mood in the air, but also a glimmer of hope.

“That feeling of hope is seeing all the individuals, from all walks of life, which she had a profound effect on in her amazing life,” Martinez said. “It was hopeful because it showed how her legacy is going to continue on for generations to come.”
