The Angelo State Rams won thier first game of the season against West Texas A&M 21-10.

The ASU Rams football team on Sept. 26 defeated the West Texas A&M Buffaloes in their season opener at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field, 21-10.

With just 12 plays, WTAMU only needed one drive to score their first touchdown. Despite the

intense defensive efforts on both sides, the Buffs managed to maintain the lead in the first quarter.

At the start of the second quarter, ASU received the ball and started their drive off strong.  Quarterback Zach Bronkhorst threw to wide receiver Kellen Pachot with 14 minutes left on the clock. Shortly after, running back Carl Odom scored a touchdown on a two-yard run, and kicker Jared Defelice would tie the game 7-7 with the extra point.

“The biggest thing is my O-line, they come ready to work every day. I see them come to work hungry everyday, so It motivates me to be my best. Overall, the game was great, and I fell in love with Angelo and CJ Odom is in full support of Angelo State,” Odom Said.

After ASU’s touchdown, WTAMU received the ball. However, ASU got the ball right back due to their strategic defense causing a turnover on the 31-yard line. Odom proceeded to a first down to get the team moving. Seconds later, Bronkhorst handed the ball off to running back Nathaniel Omayebu to boost the score six more points, followed by the extra point from Defelice making it 14-7.

“It felt good because we worked so hard in the summer, the atmosphere was great and so were the fans,” Omayebu said. “I'm glad we got the dub.”

After the second quarter, halftime began with graduate student Bill Rogers selected to receive the 2020 Nelson Mandela Freedom Award. Rogers is the first ASU graduate student from Liberia and not only honors exemplary leaders who serve as a vital force for positive change in their communities, but spends time helping disadvantaged youths in Liberia through his own Bill Rogers Youth Foundation.

After the recognition of Rogers, the Ram Band shook the stadium with familiar songs such as “Space Odyssey” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5.” Speaking of recognition, valuable players such as wide receiver Austin Landry, linebacker Daron Allman and defensive back Deshaun Douglas made key contributions toward the team’s win.

Landry threw for a gain of yards to Bronkhorst after a vital trick play. “I haven’t played quarterback since my junior year in high school, so being able to throw the ball again was pretty nice,” Landry said.

Allman had the first and last sacks of the game, totaling three sacks on WTAMU’s quarterback in the game.  “We practiced long and hard all summer and I saw him pull, so I just tacked all game,” Allman said. “Football is my peace.”

Douglas scored his first pick six for ASU, giving them great field position late in the game. He said he had one goal in mind on the field. “Being on the field felt great to be back on, especially since COVID and the oppression of racial injustice that’s been happening lately,” Douglas said. “Regardless of what’s been going on, taking it to the crib was the only thing on my mind.”

The game ended with country artist Aaron Watson serenading the ASU community after a great win. Watson played live in the southeast corner of the stadium and even took a picture with Dominic the Ram. A variety of songs were performed such as the popular “Outta Style” Next up the ASU Rams will next take on the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in Nacogdoches, Texas, on Saturday Oct.10.
