The Association of Mexican-American Students, Multicultural Affairs and the Spanish Club on Nov. 1 celebrated Día De los Muertos, otherwise known as the Day of the Dead, in the Houston Harte University Center.

Día De Los Muertos is a two-day holiday from Nov. 1-2 that honors the spirits of the deceased. Traditionally in Mexico, Nov. 1 is also known as Día de los Inocentes, or Day of the Innocents, which celebrates the lives of infants and children. The following day commemorates the adults who have passed. The holiday also coincides with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day on Nov. 1 and All Souls Day on Nov. 2.

Students had the opportunity to decorate sugar skulls courtesy of the Spanish Club, decorate keychains, paint picture frames and enjoy eating pozole. An ofrenda, or offering, will be on display until Nov. 5, and students can place pictures of late friends or relatives on it.

“It reminds me that people that are gone are still here,” junior Leticia Esquivel said.

“I get to enjoy it with people that I love and with the friends that I have here at ASU. It’s just so welcoming and seeing the ofrenda makes me happy. Growing up, I never really realized how much it would mean to me.”

Erika Baeza, director of multicultural and student activities programs, said the holiday is celebrated annually at ASU. Student participation over the years, especially with the inclusion of an altar, has necessitated a move outside of the MSAP office.

“It’s been the second year that we created an altar on the outside of the MCSAC,” Baeza said. “We used to have it inside, but it would just get bigger and bigger until it didn’t fit inside anymore. Last year we took it outside and now it’s out there and the event has kind of gotten a bit bigger and bigger every year.”
