Sigma Kappa volunteered on Oct. 21 at San Angelo’s annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s to raise awareness and funds for research.

"The proceeds went to the Alzheimer’s Association, which helps with Alzheimer’s research," Claire Parker, Sigma Kappa’s vice president of philanthropic service, said.

Two of Sigma Kappa’s five philanthropies are dedicated to gerontology and Alzheimer’s research.

"We try to raise awareness because the disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States," Parker said.

Participants wore purple to raise awareness and show support. Attendants of the event included residents of local memory care facilities.

"Sigma Kappa interacts with The Springs Alzheimer’s home, but we had Brookdale come out as well," Parker said. "We work with them a lot and do Alzheimer’s home visits, we have them come out and get free t-shirts, do some Zumba, receive medals and flowers and all sorts of stuff."

Sigma Kappa led the whole competition, raising over $6,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association. About 60 members of the Zeta Kappa chapter showed up to volunteer and help at work stations. Each member was required to raise $100 or more.

"It’s very competitive," Parker said. "We are very passionate about what we do and how we fundraise." We want to be the number one in the city."

Jordyn Rutlege, Sigma Kappa’s vice president of scholarships and member of the Committee of Alzheimer’s Association, participated in the walk and raised $120.

"We love doing this. We love coming out and meeting the people who come to support the cause," Rutlege said.

Sigma Kappa also takes part in other volunteer service events.

"This is probably our biggest charity event that we do," Rutlege said.

Sigma Kappa also has a Week of Giving later this semester.
