The second annual Dance Marathon on Oct. 25 helped students raise funds for a local charity.

The event raised $4065.46 for the Children’s Miracle Network.

"That is $1000 over our original goal and double the amount we had last year," Dance Marathon cochairman Heidi Weiler said.

All of the proceeds go to CMN at Shannon Medical Center.

"You come and you dance and you learn stories about Miracle Kids that are here in San Angelo," Weiler said. "It’s a fun event for anyone to come to."

One of the Miracle Kids at the Dance Marathon was Jonah Cortes.

Cortes was diagnosed with a mass in his lower intestines at 18 months, but with help from CMN, Cortes received the treatment he needed and is now living the life of an active toddler.

"I just want to say thank you to everybody that came out here because the money that you raise makes such a difference to all the families," Eliza Arellano, Cortes’ mother, said. "For my family, it made a world of difference because now I have him here with me."

This is the first year that Dance marathon is a part of Homecoming week.

"At a lot of schools it’s really big so that’s what we’re hoping to do," Alyssa Torres, Dance Marathon cochairman, said. "Our Children’s Miracle Network is really important to a lot of us here and a lot of staff too."

The Homecoming committee had the opportunity to tour Shannon and meet some of the families before the event.

CMN helps children who need treatment for a variety of illnesses and who come from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds.

Their goal is to provide the services, equipment and training necessary so that the children can stay in San Angelo or close to home for their treatments.

It’s just a fun way to make a difference," Weiler said.
