Love at first sight

I fell in love this summer on vacation. I was swept off my feet in an adventure punctuated with beauty, serenity and happiness. I fell in love with Colorado.

When my mom suggested a family vacation there, I was skeptical.

A 12 hour car ride for some mountains? I would be away from my friends that were home for the summer, and I would have to take time off work.

No thank you.

But she convinced me to go in the name of family.

We packed up the truck and camper and headed north.

It seemed like it took forever to get out of Texas.

I fell asleep somewhere in New Mexico, and when I awoke, mountains were out my window. We had reached Colorado.

The moment I stepped out of the truck, I fell in love with the crisp air and broad skies.

Tall trees surrounded us, and the cooler temperatures were a welcomed change from the August heat in my home state.

The more time we spent there, the more I slipped into infatuation.

The people were friendly like they were back home.

The weather was wondrous, and I couldn’t get enough of the immense mountains.

We traveled into Colorado Springs from our campground, and I somehow fell even harder for Colorado.

There were art galleries, museums, shopping districts and restaurants with some of the best food I had encountered.

My family went white-water rafting, and I was exhilarated by the experience.

We toured an art museum, and I almost cried at seeing some of my favorite Impressionistic pieces.

We hiked Red Canyon, saw ancient Native American dwellings and rode a train to Pike’s Peak.

One of my favorite places was a little French bakery we encountered on our way to rafting.

The owner was French and had a heavy accent.

The éclair I devoured was simply divine.

Before we had even been there half a week, I began looking up universities in Colorado that offered English graduate programs.

I will always have a special place in my heart for Texas. After all, it has been home for 19 years.

But I fell in love this summer on vacation.

I fell in love with Colorado.
