ASU’s Title IX Office is dedicated to addressing issues surrounding gender discrimination and sexual misconduct.

"The most important message I hope we convey is just that we’re here to support students and we’re here to ensure fairness and equity," Michelle Boone, director of Title IX Compliance, said.

Sexual misconduct includes all forms of gender-based discrimination or harassment, relationship violence, which is dating, or domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, public indecency, stalking and sexual harassment.

The process of reporting such incidents can be done online through a form found on the office’s website.

These reports are only seen by a small number of members of the Title IX Team, all of whom can assist a student in addressing the report.

After the report is received, someone from the Office of Title IX Compliance will follow up with the student via email typically within 48 hours.

The Office of Title IX Compliance will ask that the student make an appointment to discuss how they would like the issue to be addressed and interim remedies available to address the student’s safety.

The Title IX Team then addresses the issue and provides remedies after an incident is reported.

"Our first and foremost goal always is to address the student’s safety issues," Boone said.

The team meets with the student to discuss the situation and any safety concerns.

However, the decision to file a formal complaint falls on the student.

Regardless of the decision, the Title IX Office can assist the student with solutions to ensure safety.

If a complaint is filed, an impartial investigation begins followed by an Administrative Hearing.

"Typically things like this scare students because they don’t know what to expect," Boone said, "So we want to make sure that they know that we’re a warm welcoming office that is here to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and here to ensure that you all can be students no matter what side of the case you’re on."

Students also have the option to speak to the university’s counselors or medical professionals both deemed as "confidential reporters" and are not required to share information with the Title IX Office.

Faculty and staff are obligated by law to report back to the Title IX Office if an employee or a student reports alleged sexual misconduct to them.

Title IX also coordinates the AlcoholEDU and Haven online programs, which educate students on alcohol and sexual misconduct, respectively.

The office also holds group discussions such as "Pizza & Chill: A Consent Event" where they discussed sex and consent using pizza as a metaphor.

Free pizza was given followed by a TED Talk presentation.

The next counselor-led group discussion "Let’s Talk About It: Healthy Relationships" will be held on Oct. 30 and Nov. 28, focusing on any relationship questions students have including problems, perceptions and healthy relationship habits.

Title IX and Conduct Officer Kalyn Coffey said that they will begin hosting Escalation Workshops at least once a month, which will focus on healthy relationships and identifying early warning signs of relationship violence.

Boone assures that Title IX is here to support the students when they need it.

The Title IX Office is located in the UC inside the Student Affairs Office.
