Look for the good

This has been a heavy week in America.
The hate displayed on the Las Vegas strip is heart wrenching and the ripple effect of this senseless violence is immeasurable.
It would be naïve and insensitive of me to speak as if I understand the events of that fateful night because I don’t.
I don’t understand, and I may never understand.
I don’t understand how a person could commit such heinous actions. I don’t understand how a man could willingly steal the lives of innocent people. I don’t understand the darkness capable of residing within the human soul.
But I do know this: Hate will not win.
We must go into the world and fight against this.
Let’s grab the hand of our neighbors and dive headfirst into this world with sympathy and boldness.
Let’s pour out every ounce of love we have.
The violence that occurred is unfathomable, but it is real and we cannot sit idly by.
During times such as this, I think of a quote by everybody’s favorite neighbor, Mister Rogers.
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”
Now is the time for us to be the helpers.
It is easy to get lost in the brokenness of this world, but don’t let it steal your compassion, your joy and your humanity.
Don’t let yourself grow numb to the hatred in this world. Lean in to it, feel it deeply, mourn, grow, learn and make change.
Speak for the silent.
Stand for the broken.
Fight for the defenseless.
Hate is a disease out to rob this world of its beauty. Do not let it.
Search for the beauty around you, and I promise you will find it.
