ASU’s mascot Dominic the Ram, a Rambouillet sheep, is not only a symbol for the university but for the San Angelo community as well.
“He not only symbolizes the university, but he represents this area’s agricultural background,” said Macy Duncan, president of the Block & Bridle Club. “For a lot of people around this area, raising sheep and goats is a way of life, and I think he gets to represent that for the university and be an advocate for people that have never been around the industry.”
Dominic is under the care of the members of the Block and Bridle Club and the Department of Agriculture.
He lives at the ASU Ranch on his days off.
“I believe that Dominic stands as a symbol of strength and courage,” Taryn Titsworth, Dominic’s handler, said. “Rams are strong and do not back down when things get hard.”
Dominic makes appearances at several ASU events such as Homecoming, ring ceremonies, Ram Jam and on the sidelines at football games.
Titsworth maintains Dominic’s trailer, equipment, and trims his wool and hooves.
In 1940, D. T. Jones, a local rancher, donated Shorty, the original ram, to the university.
“Dominic” became the official name when the student body voted in 1963. The name has since been used in succession.
Dominic IX term began after the death of Dominic VIII in March, but the ram has been an ASU symbol for over 70 years.
