Defying expectaions

I’m sure I’m not the only one who watched High School Musical a couple times as a high schooler or college student.

There’s something about the film that makes it fun to replay once in a while, bask in the nostalgia and sing along to the songs some of us may know by heart.

After watching the film, the "Stick to the Status Quo," lyrics resounded in my head for a couple of days.

When the character Zeke, a basketball player, sang about his love for baking, everyone around him rejected the idea that one of East High’s star players could love something that is not usually associated with sports.

This scene parallels society.

We are encouraged to be ourselves and not to be ashamed of the things we love. However, we are also told that we should fit certain qualifications, behave in specific ways, and stick to the status quo.

For generations, people have been labelled based on superficial qualities or told to fit the mold of their "group."

Basically, society says that we should do the things we love, but only if society approves of it.

The irony is almost unbearable, but nevertheless, we must carry on.

Defying society’s expectations is essential to our growth as unique individuals in a system that expects conformity and shames those who refuse to stay inside the box.

As diverse beings, we can never truly fit in any one-size-fits-all concept, lest we want to see a monotonous world instead of the colorful reality that it is.

Perhaps in the future, we may no longer have to force ourselves to comply to ideals we never truly liked. This will only be possible if we start breaking from the chain ourselves. We should express our true identities without the underlying fear of becoming the outcast.
