The women’s volleyball team defeated West Texas A&M 3-0 on Saturday September 23.

Head Coach Chuck Waddington said he liked the team’s balance on their side of the net offensively and thought they were terminal from all different locations.

"All six attackers did a really nice job and hit for a high percentage and our setters did a great job of distributing the ball and keeping the other team off balance," Waddington said.

Waddington said they focused on themselves, took care of the ball on their side and also took care of eachother.

"I’ve said that a couple times now and we’re getting better at that, that’s something that builds chemistry and builds trust on the courts and that’s something that we’ve kind of been lacking so I was pleased to see that," Waddington said.

Waddington said they made changes in their line-up cause they were sputtering.

"Those kids that we made the changes with they really responded so I was proud of them for that and I need them to keep working," Waddington said.

Waddington said he needs to keep the players that didn’t play as much in Saturday’s game focused and ready.

Waddington said the girls had opportunities and rose to the challenge in the game.

"You tell the kids all the time ‘when you get your opportunity make the most of it’ and I felt like for the first time in awhile they really did that," Waddington said.

Sophomore outside hitter Haley Coulter said what worked for them was having good passing which led to good settings.

"It gave me a lots of opportunities to have different shots," Coulter said.

Coulter said they have been working on communicating during practice and thinks that is what is helping them a lot.

"We’re talking a lot about our shots and we’re talking about the block and getting there and closing on time," Coulter said.

Coulter said overall, them working as a team helped them perform better than usual.

Waddington said the win definitely helps them.

"Obviously we’ve had a rough stretch this last week or so and to see us start to pull out of it and start to get a little more like ourselves, it definitely builds confidence," Waddington said.

The team will have its next game in Kingsville against Texas A&M University- Kingsville on September 29.

Waggington said going to Kingsville is going to be hard for the team.

"It’s a long ride, it’s a cold gym and they’re a good team," Waddington said. "That combination right there means it’s going to be a challenging week for us… we got to prepare for it."
