Dana Campbell serves drinks with a smile on her face. Campbell started working at Chick-fil-A in college and has worked her way up to Assistant Operator.

Dana Campbell, originally from Merkle, Texas, started ASU in the fall of 2011. She choose ASU because of its proximity to home, generous scholarships and her favorite part of the school, the campus.

"The campus is awesome. That’s one of the reasons I chose ASU because when I toured it, it felt like a park," Campbell said.

Campbell majored in Interdisciplinary studies with what she thought was a clear career path.

"I was originally going to be an elementary school teacher and changed my mind," Campbell said.

Now, the 24 year-old is the Assistant Operator of Chick-fil-A San Angelo, which encompasses both the free-standing locations, as well as the mall and on-campus locations.

"I’m responsible for results and leadership development. So I crunch numbers. I spend time developing people. I spend time talking to vendors. I basically try to own as much responsibility as possible, without involving the operator unless absolutely necessary."

She began working at Chick-fil-a in January of 2013.

"While at ASU, I started working at Chick-fil-A. I really enjoyed it; I started working forty hours a week, then I started working extra shifts, picking up time and really enjoying what I did. The more I started doing it the more I thought, ‘Okay now I want to be a manager.’ I started working my way up the chain, working as a manager. And then I thought, ‘Okay, I want to lead Chick-fil-A!’ and so the longer I continued to do it the more I wanted to work with Chick-fil-A and not teach."

Yet Campbell had hesitations about her newfound love for the quick-service restaurant.

"I thought, ‘No, I’m getting a degree in education and have to be a teacher.’ I went through my student teaching and hated every second of it. I decided if I was going to be miserable, it wasn’t going to be worth it. So even though I had that degree, I could still use that degree outside the intended field."

Campbell says that ASU prepared her well for her career.

"One of the things I think that was really beneficial was the classroom setting. I kind of learned how to work with people my own age. It was a more professional setting than what I was used to, so I was able to transfer those professional skills to work."

Even though she does not teach, she feels like her major serves her well.

"When I started training in the restaurant, I was able to use some of my educational philosophies and strategies with team members."

Campbell also says ASU prepared her well for adult life, as well.

"It totally gave me a different perspective on being an adult. By giving me that independence, I was able to own some of that responsibility."

The alumnus said her favorite part of the job is, "Definitely the people. I really enjoy getting to help people go where they want to go.. and the food, of course."

Campbell hasn’t only focused on her career, however.

"I have been married for four and a half years. We have a four month old, and he is teething."

Dana’s husband, Trent, received his Bachelors in math education from ASU, and is currently getting his Masters in math education.

Her go to meal at Chick-fil-A?

"I get the same things every time. I get the chicken sandwich with extra pickles and American cheese and a cookie. Every time."
