ASU’s women’s tennis team returned this fall after a 30-year hiatus.

The team has four freshmen and two sophomores from France, Mexico, the Netherlands, Sweden and the state of Florida

Coach Chris Bizot said the girls have been getting along very well.

"You never really know when you have a brand new team coming from all over different parts of the world," Bizot said. "I would probably say that they maybe get along a little too well."

Zoë Gubbels, freshman, said she thinks the team is great and they grow closer to each other every practice.

"We spend a lot of time together," Gubbels said. "It’s not like anybody is out of the picture. We are just one group, it’s been great."

Gubbels said in the beginning it was a little scary starting the team up but it has been a good team experience so far.

Bizot said the team has been doing well with their practices and have been working really hard.

"They’re probably one of the hardest working teams I’ve had in my coaching career," Bizot said.

Bizot said being the first tennis coach at ASU in 30 years is exciting and it has been a new challenge for him.

"Everybody here has been so supportive," Bizot said. "It’s just an exciting time to be here."

Bizot said he isn’t big on setting goals.

"For us, it is more of a process and trying to get better every day so that’s what we’re trying to do and we will keep doing that," Bizot said.

Gubbels said it is an honor to be on the team.

"I want to do my best so badly and make process and create a good picture here at ASU," Gubbels said.

Gubbels said she isn’t sure what kind of goals players can achieve here however she has seen the ‘player of the week’ awards going to players in all the different sports.

"I want that and I hope I can achieve it," Gubbels said.

The team competed in the University of Texas at Tyler Invitational and the St. Mary’s University Tournament. The team will play in the ITA Fall Women’s Regional in Midland on Sept. 28, 29 and Oct. 30.
