Laura Scott smiles while she remembers her time at ASU. Scott is the broker and founder of Addresses Real Estate.

Laura Scott became part of the ASU Ram Fam in the fall of 1998, however, her family’s connection with ASU began many years before she started formally attending the university.

"My grandfather was Lloyd Vincent (former ASU president). When we were kids, we would go up to the university with my grandmother and go the administration building at night. We would throw acorns at his (Dr. Vincent’s) window to get his attention."

Four generations of Scott’s family have affiliated themselves with ASU, from her grandfather’s time as president, to her parent’s and her own attendance, as well as the current attendance of two of her nephews.

Scott said she chose ASU not only for the familial ties she had to it, but for many other reasons as well. "I felt like for what I wanted to do long term, ASU was going to give me more opportunities than anywhere else. I had friends that went off other places, but they didn’t get the same experience I did, as far as small class size and not just being another number."

Scott majored in Communications and minored in English.

Scott didn’t have a definite career plan, but she did have an idea of what field she wanted to work in.

"I think it’s one of those things you never know, when you’re 20 years old and you’re trying to decide what direction to take in your career. That’s a hard thing to do. I never believed I would be involved in a business field. I’m blessed that I have had the opportunity to experience ASU the way I did and for it to prepare me for my career. I did not realize that I would end up doing real estate."

After graduating in 2002, Scott used her Communications degree in the marketing field before starting her career in real estate.

"I was actually doing marketing for the home health industry, and I was on maternity leave, and my mom was in real estate and she said, ‘Why don’t you come try it for a couple months,’ and then I never went back. That was in 2004."

Now the owner of her own business, Addresses Real Estate, Scott has become a pillar of the San Angelo community.

"I’m the broker- what that means is that you have to go through more course work and you have to take a test beyond your regular real estate license test, and then you can sponsor agents under you. I got my broker’s license in 2008 and started Addresses that same year. Nine years ago."

Scott values all the people she interacts with.

"I just love working with clients. I like the problem solving aspect of it a lot and I love working with agents."

Scott also had advice for students seeking to thrive in school while developing their career, "When I started out I was 23-24 years old, so I was very young to be in this business, and then I was very young when I got my broker’s license. I want to encourage young moms, young women, and young men that they can be successful if they have a goal in mind and if they continue to work hard and serve the community."

Attributing much of her success to ASU, Scott praised the university’s focus on students.

"I think that ASU really gave me a foundation that people are important. ASU, I feel, truly does have that whole idea that students are important, and we are a family at ASU."
