The Rams football team defeated Northern Michigan University 48-20 in Saturday’s game putting them 2-0 for the season.

Touchdowns from Spencer Gilbert II, Lawson Ayo, Josh Stevens, and Larry Johnson pushed the Rams to victory.

Ayo had two touchdowns and a two-point conversion from throws by Jake Faber.

"I feel like Jake has good chemistry with all the receivers. Tonight, I guess, was my night," Ayo said. "I was getting man coverage all night, and I got to win my one on one, and he just took advantage of that."

Ayo said Faber makes it easy on the receivers to do their job as they make it easier on him to do his job as quarterback.

"I like the way he’s looking, if he keeps playing like this, we got a long way to go," Ayo said.

Head Coach Will Wagner said Faber has done a great job of preparing himself for games.

"The guys upfront give him all the opportunities and the chance to make those great throws," Wagner said. "We got guys on the outside that are making great catches, too, so it was a great team effort tonight."

Wagner said Ayo showed what he could do as a true freshman last year and has improved immensely.

"Hats off to our guys improving week to week, but we got a big test coming up these few weeks," Wagner said.

The team needs to work on some things before the Lone Star Conference opener against Tarleton State next week like their consistency, tackles, and cutting down on penalties Wagner said.

Wagner said if they can get these items cleaned up, they will be successful.

Ayo also said they need to work on penalties.

"Our offense is too good and our defense is too good to lose to penalties," Ayo said.

The team had a few injuries on the field, but Wagner said they will get checked out by the doctor.

"We got to get healthy and get ready to go for Tarleton," Wagner said. "We got some great kids. I know if we do have some injuries, the next guy is going to step up and make great plays."

The Rams will host their LSC opener against Tarleton at the LeGrand Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 16.

"Being 2-0 going into our first conference game should be a confidence builder for our kids and we should be able to use that momentum," Wagner said. "We’re at home in front of a great crowd."

Ayo said the team will be ready for the game.

"When conference rolls around you kind of get that extra adrenaline," Ayo said.

Wagner said there is no doubt they will be ready to go, especially being on their home turf.
