ASU held a press conference Thursday, Sept. 12 to announce their achievement of their goal for enrollment to reach 10,000 students.

"We have 10,447 students enrolled at Angelo State," Dr. May, President of the university, announced.

When ASU aligned with the Texas Tech University system, administration set a goal to reach 10,000 students by 2020. "I can tell you now, that we did that, and we did it three years early," Dr. May said.

The conference was attended by Texas State Rep. Drew Darby, as well as faculty and staff.

"There’s one person who’s got as much to do with any this as anyone, and that’s Drew Darby," Dr. May said, introducing Rep. Darby.

Darby explained that when he took office in 2007, Angelo State was aligned with the Texas State University System. However, the administration at ASU was looking to affiliate with a different system.

"We said, ‘How do we do that?’, and I said, ‘Well, I’ll do it!’… No was not an answer in my vocabulary… We started building a consensus… something you have to do in the legislature to get something done. It’s not just something you wake up one day and think, ‘Gee that sounds like a good idea!’ Although we do that, too," he joked.

After further explaining how he passed his first bill in the Texas Legislature to move ASU to the Texas Tech University system, Darby said, "That allowed for growth… but Brian (Dr. May), you said a number, and that number seemed unobtainable. But I had great faith in this administration. This institution is known far and wide in the state of Texas, and in the country… I am so proud."

"In addition to improving our recruiting and retention efforts for traditional students, we knew that to meet our enrollment goal we would have to implement new courses and strategies to attract more online graduate students and dual-credit students," Dr. May said. "Thanks to those efforts, the Ram Family now stretches across Texas, throughout the U.S. and around the world."

Dr. Javier Flores, Vice President of student affairs and enrollment management, also spoke, delving into the history of ASU and how it has been able to grow since its beginnings in the early 1920s. "We are the Concho Valley’s university; we are the regional university; and I believe we are everything those leaders in the 1920s envisioned," he said.

May ended the announcement by emphasizing the university’s accomplishment "ASU is a destination, not a default."
