Ram Rugby’s season opener was marked with a 38-33 victory over Texas Tech University on Sept. 2 at the intramural fields.

"It feels great. We have a whole bunch of new guys so it was exciting to see what we can do," Kevin Reid, senior outside center and vice president, said.

The match was a battle between the Rams and the Raiders, with the score teetering between the two teams.

Despite the 99 degree temperature, fans of Ram Rugby filled the bleachers with overflow sitting in lawn chairs and on the ground.

The high temperatures of the afternoon and the intense competition left both teams exhausted at the end of the 90 minutes.

"I’m super tired, but super excited," Brian Signorelli, senior inside centre and president, said after the game.

The Rams had to do some adjustments after losing some of their star players last year, such as Beau Waskom, Troy Knudsen and Derrick Clifton.

"Losing a lot of our big guys last year hurt, but our returners stepped up to train the new guys," Reid said.

"We don’t have any really strong guys on our line anymore, so we’re trying to spread out and work more as a team," Signorelli said. "We’ve only had a week to prepare these freshmen, and they did a really, really, really good job, and I’m very proud of them."

Stetson Timmons, winger, and Jordan Stanley, fullback, helped the Rams offensively by moving the ball up the field and scoring tries.

"We have a goal to reach, and this was just the first step," Reid said. "We’ve been saying that Saturday was going to be payday. We’ve worked all week for this."

Ram Rugby takes pride in the brotherhood and connections that it’s member have formed.

"At the end of the day we are a family, we love each other, we trust each other, and that’s what we’re trying to play like," Signorelli said.

"Whenever we’re down we look each other in the eyes and know that we’ve got this," Reid said. "No one else in the world can do what we do. We pump each other up and get each other back into the game when we’re down."

The Rams’ next battle is against the University of Dallas, a team the Rams beat three times in the post season last year to win the state championship title, the Cowboy Cup, and take third place in Regionals.

The game is set to be played Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. at the intramural fields.
