Jarett Lujan shows joy in is work. This is Lujan’s second year as an Admissions Counselor.

This week’s alumnus probably looks pretty familiar due to his recent graduation and noteworthy participation in Student Government.

Jarett Lujan graduated last spring with a master’s degree in student leadership and development, after first obtaining a bachelor’s degree in biology from ASU.

Originally from Marfa, Texas, Lujan said he chose to become a part of the Ram Fam because, "It was the hometown feel. I just loved how everyone was friendly and wanted to help everyone out."

After being asked how he would describe his freshman year, Lujan said, "Quiet, I didn’t get very involved on campus, except for joining Tri-Beta. But I’m a first generation student, so I spent a lot of time figuring out how college works."

Soon, however, he became active in many different aspects of student life, eventually becoming student body president in 2015.

Besides significant involvement in the Student Government Association, he also participated in Kappa Delta Rho, served as a Rambassador, was a member of the track and field team, as well as served on the Student Organizations Advisory Committee.

He was a part of the homecoming committee, too, and participated in a Medical Internship class that allowed him to volunteer as a health coach in the community.

Lujan was also a member of the Association of Mexican-American Students, where he grew close to Dr. Klingemann, the History Department Chair and advisor of AMAS.

"He inspired me. He took me under his wing professionally, but also served as a father figure," Lujan said. "He’s why I’m here today."

"I wanted to go into medicine, but that took a turn when I became student body president in 2015," Lujan said. "I found I had a passion for helping students in college."

Currently, Lujan serves as an admissions counselor for ASU and as a student regent for the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents.

"Eventually, I would like to be either vice president of president of a university, or head up a student affairs department," Lujan said.

Lujan attributes his success in many areas to ASU.

"Honestly because ASU is such a small school, you get a lot of opportunities," Lujan said. "Ram Fam is a true culture. We promote each other."

Lujan’s advice to current students is "do not be afraid of getting out of your comfort zone, show school spirit, and enjoy it, because your time here goes very quickly."
