ASU has acquired a plot of land from the city to build a new parking lot before the Fall 2016 semester. The parking lot will be built near the Massie, Vanderventer and Plaza Verde residence halls. “The lot and water tower belonged to the city,” said President of ASU Dr. Brian J. May, Ph.D. “We owned some land behind the cemetery that’s in the corner. They wanted some land to build a chapel behind the cemetery. So I traded them that land for this land but when I did it, I also told them they had to tear down the water tower because it’s been empty for years.”   May said the city had to get all of the concrete off and remove the building as to make the lot ready to build a parking lot on it. “We have all that parking, which is completely surrounded by dorms,” May said.  “Students will park on it immediately and the parking zone will be whatever students use around that area.”

They are contracted for a year to begin clearing out the area to start construction May said. “We just heard they’re going to remove the concrete and the building around that area,” May said. “Between the May semester and the first summer semester.” Bad break. It took years for the trade to take place and it took an arduous amount of work to get the land since anytime something of this sort takes place there’s a lot of legal documents, deeds and surveys, May said. “I had to protect the interest of the school as well,“ May said. “So I wanted to make sure the lot was properly cleared out before I made the trade.”

The new parking spaces will allow students to find easier parking and they will no longer have to park so far from their dorms. “So many changes are happening here at ASU,” freshman Heath Walker said. “This is probably one of the most important changes. So many students are getting enrolled, so the extra space is definitely a must.” Construction of the new parking lot will accommodate the parking needs of ASU students and will supply them with comfort and ease instead of having to dread finding a spot.
