The Honors Student Association has joined forces with Downtown San Angelo Inc. to bring student involvement back to the historical downtown district.

Senior Jessica LaMirand, head of the HSA committee for involvement, has been working closely with DSA to broaden community involvement in San Angelo's downtown area.

"We wanted to create a community service opportunity for students," LaMirand said. "But we also wanted to create a community connection for the students at ASU."

Last year to encourage involvement downtown, the DSA hosted the Miss Wool parade downtown, and was planning to continue the tradition this year.

However, this year the ASU homecoming parade has been moved downtown and will not follow the traditional route around campus.

Board Secretary of DSA and owner of Miss Hattie's restaurant Brenda Gunter is helping put on the Miss Wool parade, and is working with ASU to merge the two parades.

"We really believe that ASU is a very important part of our community," Gunter said. "So we postponed the Ms. Wool parade one week this year in order to combine them. The more we can draw students and people from out of town into the downtown area, the more beneficial it would be for downtown."

Along with the parade, students have other opportunities to get involved in the downtown community. DSA and HSA have devised several activities to get students downtown and give them a reason to stay there.

Stores in the downtown district are hosting a fashion show in the parade. Girls will ride on floats wearing the fashions from several downtown shops.

Female ASU students who can strut their stuff are needed and encouraged to participate. For more information, contact: Joyce Wilde or Brenda Gunter.
