So through my various sources of information, I have run across an interesting article talking about a possible new Nintendo DS.

Now normally I wouldn't be writing about this because it is still a rumor, but it's the details of the rumor that caught my attention. The rumor is that the new DS will have the ability to play music and it will have a built in camera. If this comes to fruition, then I am one happy camper because I love it when two pieces of technology meld into one super product.

But my point is, as technology progresses we get more items, and more items means more clutter. But when a company gets the idea to simplify what is in our pockets, mankind takes one step forward in the world of technology. It's not necessarily the product that makes me happy, but it's the idea.

For example, did you know that Apple invented the PDA? Yup, it's true. It was called the "Newton." But, it was too advanced for its time and died out. But the idea remained and Palm took the reins and, well as they say, the rest is history.

Currently, the Nintendo DS is on its way to overthrowing the PS2 as the most-sold video game console of all time. And if this new redesign is true, than it will only help the DS achieve this goal.

But what does that have to do with anything, you might be asking yourself. Well, allow me to enlighten you.

With an install base of well over 90 million units, the DS is practically a household name. And if this new DS has an adoption rate like its predecessor, then it won't be long before other companies see this "money-making machine" and want in on the action.

This creates competition, and competition is the best thing in the tech world. If you get a bunch of big corporations trying to outdo the other corporations, then the result is a better product for the consumer.

Going back to the Apple one last time, before the iPod was released how many MP3 players were in the market? Very few.

Nowadays, practically every technology company has its own brand of MP3 player.

Why? It was because of the massive success of the iPod and the fact that it practically printed money for Apple. Eventually Samsung, Sony, Insignia, Microsoft and even SanDisk produced its own version of the iPod.

Technology is a never ending horserace and I love watching it every minute of every day. So I really hope that this DS rumor is true, because I can't wait to see what the other companies out there are going to create to try and compete with it.
