Shindell leaves ASU

Ex-Tech administrator Robert Shindell, who was hired by ASU Sept. 8 as special assistant to the Provost, no longer has a one-year contract with the university as of Wednesday, according to Director of Communications and Marketing Preston Lewis. According to the Human Resources Director Jesse Gomez, the office of the Provost made a decision to end the employment relationship effective Sept.

Better than Television: PING PONG

Students may have noticed a few changes in the UC as the for-home-use pingpong tables and pool table have been taken down and replaced with for-public-use quality tables. Last year, about $1,000 was spent on recreational equipment in the UC including the well-used pingpong tables and pool table to help provide a more inviting atmosphere for students.

Push for restricted parking creates discord

Student Government President Seth Chomout met with Chief James Adams Sept. 18 to discuss tightening the ropes when it comes to ASU parking. Chomout wants to make parking passes more binding to a specific location and "define residential parking by residence hall.

State of America's economy still in danger

On Monday, the infamous $700 billion bailout plan was rejected by the House of Representatives in a 228-205 decision. But, Wednesday evening, the bailout bill was resurrected when the Senate passed the bill in a 74-25 vote. The proposed bailout plan is the biggest economic bailout since the Great Depression.

Dysfunctional America takes stage

ASU's Drama department will begin its season Friday with the semester's first play, Sam Sheppard's "A Lie of the Mind." The play centers around two deeply dysfunctional families driven apart by distrust and jealousy. With abuse dividing the marriage that connects the two families, the wife moves off to be cared for by her parents, while her loathsome husband sends off a brother to look for her.

Left-wing columnist criticizes Republican Party's VP choice

In the middle of a heated voting frenzy, noted Pulitzer Prize winner and left-wing New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd appeared before a welcoming crowd in the C.J. Davidson Center to reflect on the issues of the current election. Dowd touched base on a wide array of subjects relevant to the upcoming election in November including the government's recent attempts to bail out the economy.

First-generation students shown the ropes

A new mentor/mentee program plans to match mentors with first-generation freshman starting next week in an effort to help these first-time college students adjust to the academic and social struggles. Flor Madero, coordinator of First-generation RAMS, said the number of first-generation students outnumbers the number of trained mentors and most mentors will work with more than one student.

Center for International Studies splits funds with Goodfellow Air Force Base

A bill that would give $4 million to ASU and Goodfellow Air Force Base is, as of Thursday, awaiting the signature President George W. Bush to be signed into law. The grant will provide $1.66 million to Goodfellow and $2.4 million to ASU's Center for International Studies.

Five student groups await official approval

ASU may soon see five new student organizations on campus. On Monday night, the Student Government Association passed five bills for groups who hope to become official student organizations. The SGA submitted the bills Tuesday to the Center for Student Involvement.
