Memorial honors dearly departed

Centennial cheaper than Texan, traffic survey meeting in May

Tour of Centennial Village Since Centennial's groundbreaking nearly seven months ago, students witnessed as workers set the foundation, poured the concrete and erected the $21 million dollar project to create 526 beds for residence. The village stands now almost four months away from the August 1 completion date when 476 units will be available for student use.

Faculty members wrap up careers or move on

As the year wraps up, it is not only seniors who head off to new and better things, but a hand full of faculty members are graduating in their own way. From the college of education, physics professor, Dr. James Hademenos, is retiring after 28 years at ASU.

Freshman makes cut for 2008 Crossmen Drum, Bugle Corps

"It's more than just marching. More than a concert. More than a show." These are words that freshman Drew Saenz will soon embrace daily. These are the words that describe Crossmen, an elite team of drum and bugle corps that Saenz is now a part of. Crossmen is a non-profit organization based in San Antonio.

Veteran professor wins Teaching Excellence

Dr. Bonnie Amos, professor in biology since 1987, is the recipient of this year's Teaching Excellence Award. She said she is very grateful for the award, but reading the students' submitted letters was reward enough. "It was very touching," Amos said. "It was one of the surprises about this award…I had no idea what a difference it had made to them.

'Feels like graduation time'

Come May 10 the Junell Center will be packed to the brim with proud parents and family members. There will be crying, hugs and kisses. The flashes from all the cameras will resemble a defunct strobe light and people will fight for good spots for their camcorders, while the inevitable air horn deafens more than one.

Cheese wheels keep on turning

The Society of Physics Students is hosting its first Edible Car Grand Prix Thursday, May 1, inviting anyone willing to create, race and then eat a vehicle made of completely edible products. Hoping to spur science excitement, SPS President and senior Meagan Saldua said that the tasteful competition is open to two-to-three person teams consisting of anyone wanting to participate.

Center for International Studies expands role, offices at university

When the Center for International Studies moved into its new office space this month, the move not only increased the department's work area, but its role as well. Formerly housed in one office on the third floor of the Porter Henderson Library, the CIS now encompasses Rooms 101/102 in the Rassman Building.

Centennial Time Capsule Entries

Everything from coffee grounds to a MP3 player were submitted for the contest. Four entries are on display in the UC. Students, faculty and staff may vote until April 25 and the winner will be chosen on April 28. First place is $500, second is $200, third is $100 and fourth is $75.

New horizons for teachers at outdoor school

Future teachers now have even more resources for knowledge at their fingertips thanks to the Texas Tech Outdoor School at Junction. This semester saw the first group of students visit the outdoor school April 9 as part of their Internship I training and will see another group return to the school for an overnight trip April 30 through May 1.
