Last Friday, the Rams and Rambelles competed in their second meet of the season at the Oliver Jackson Open, hosted by Abilene Christian.
The second meet produced the track team's second national qualifier. Freshman David Browne threw a distance of 164'3" amongst a field that consisted of Lone Star Conference rivals ACU and Tarleton State.
Though he only finished fourth, his toss was long enough to punch him a ticket to the national meet in Walnut, Calif.
"It's huge for a freshman to qualify for nationals," Coach James Reid said, "especially since this was only his second collegiate meet."
The season continued to show great promise for junior Adree Lakey. A discus throw of 157'2" qualified her for the national meet and earned her the gold medal. The discus is the second event Lakey will be a part of in California, after qualifying for the shot put at the Border Olympics two weeks ago.
Lakey also won the shot put (47'4") at the Oliver Jackson Open. Her two gold medals were coupled with silver medals in the hammer (163'1") and the javelin (132'11").
More success came for the 'Belles in the field, with Whitney Law winning first place in the pole vault (11'1") for the second time in as many meets. Kyndell Howell finished third in the long jump with a leap of 17'3."
On the track, the 'Belles continued to find their groove. The 4x400 relay placed first (4:02) and was nearly ten seconds in front of second place Tarleton State. Yavette Pender took third place in the 100-meter dash (12.58) after finishing first at the Border Olympics.
Hurdlers Ashley Painter and Crystal Ruiz both received gold medals. Painter won the 400-meter hurdles (1:04) and Ruiz finished first in the 100-meter hurdles (15.37) and third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:09).
'Belles distance runners also found success in Abilene. Brittany Heath finished second in the 1500-meter run (5:10) and third in the 800-meter run (2:25). Andria Nussey finished third in the 1500-meter run (5:11) behind Heath. Paige Massingill won the bronze medal in the 3000-meter run (10:59), continuing her breakout sophomore season.
