"I found out about it when I was at work and received a text from the guys who were there," Trevino said. The band won the award for Best
Tejano Album entitled "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards.
"The majority of the work for the album," Trevino said, "the recording, arranging, brainstorming, took about two weeks. Some of the stuff was improvisation and what we all felt."
Little Joe, the lead man in the band, dedicated the CD to his friend, the late Freddy Fender.
"Last June, we did a concert in Vegas as a tribute to Fender," Trevino said.
Trevino, who plays baritone saxophone for the Wind Ensemble and tenor saxophone in the Jazz Band at ASU, credits his success to his father.
"My dad is my biggest musical influence," Trevino said. "He is my driving force when it comes to music."
The head of the Department of Art and Music, Dr. David Scott, commented on the young artist's achievement.
"It's exciting for him, the music department, and ASU," Scott said. "I believe they recorded the CD in August 2007, which made it eligible for the Grammys."
Junior Lauren Shero commented on his award, stating that Trevino is "a really good guy. This is really good for him."
Junior KT Bernier was with Trevino when he heard the news.
"He was so excited," Bernier said. "When they told me he was nominated for a Grammy, I didn't know it was THE Grammys. He really is an amazing player and he has worked hard for it."
