Halloween is upon us, and San Angelo is bubbling over with 'spooktacular' events that will make even the bravest souls quake with fear. From haunted houses to terrifying tours and costume contests, this year promises to be frighteningly delightful!
Rocktober at the Steel Penny
Throughout the month of October, the Steel Penny Pub, at Park 2400, has booked a variety of bands to play. With only a $7 cover to get in, all the entertainment is worth the price.
"Each Friday and Saturday there is a different genre lined up," said Britania Perez, who is in charge of Steel Penny's booking and promotions.
On Oct. 27, the pub will host a Halloween bash with performances by The Everyday People and opening act The Effect. Perez said The Everyday People's sound is a mix of rock and soul.
"Their stage show is something to be remembered," she said.
While the bands will be rocking out, patrons and staff alike are encouraged to dress up. Even the bands will be in on the action and are allegedly dressing up as characters from "The Wizard of Oz." The bar will also host a costume contest.
The contest will take place at midnight. The first place winner will receive $100 and a free stay at the Tropicana hotel in Las Vegas. Second place will also receive the free stay in Vegas, while third place gets free cover into the bar for one year.
Right Choices for Youth Haunted House
If being scared spooks your interest, check out the RCY haunted house at Fort Concho. Positioned in Barrack 2 of the fort, the haunted house will take place Oct. 27 from 7 to 10:30 p.m.
"It's targeted for high school and college kids, primarily, but fun for everyone," Crystal Conner, PR and Marketing Coordinator for RCY said.
"No children under 10; it's just too frightening for them."
For people age 10 to 18, tickets cost $3, and $5 for those over 18. Tickets can be picked up at the door.
Conner said that the house boasts everyone's fears wrapped up into one. From clowns to insane asylums, frights are around every corner.
"Your movie theater nightmares will return as several thrillers will be brought to life as well," she said.
Night Tours at Old Fort Concho
Fort Concho is rumored to be haunted by ghosts of past officers and one small girl. Anyone eager to find out the secrets hidden in the fort can take special nighttime tours on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 27 at 9 p.m. to find out what really lurks in the darkness.
"These special tours will show the fort and some interiors in the evening darkness," Fort Concho staff member and event coordinator Cory Robinson said.
Tickets for the events can be purchased at the Barracks 1Visitor Center, located on South Oakes Street, and are $8 for adults and only $6 for children and senior citizens. Robinson noted all proceeds from the tours would go to benefit the fort's education programs.
Before the tour, guests will be offered refreshments and an orientation in the Visitor Center.
Once the tours have commenced, guides will share stories about the post with the guests and note some of the soldiers who died at the fort.
Old Eola School Costume Contest
About a half an hour outside of San Angelo is Eola, a small ghost town. The old Eola School sat creepily vacant for years, but was turned into a restaurant in 2006. On Oct. 27, the restaurant will host live bands and costume contests.
"Bob Simpson is scheduled to perform," owner Mark Cannon said. "It will be $6 to get in, and if you are in, you are in the (costume) contest."
Cannon said that the winner of the contest will receive two tickets to see the band Hinder perform on Oct. 30 in the San Angelo Coliseum and $100.
Get ready to get scared this Halloween, but be sure to have a little fun while you're at it!
